Great device falls a bit short on software, April 14, 2013

My car has two single DIN slots separated by climate controls, so it was nearly impossible for me to get a double DIN head unit.

I wanted it all: stereo, Bluetooth, navigation, backup camera, DVD, and the Pyle PLBT72G had it all. I had considered a higher priced Jensen unit, but the only one I could find was a floor model and the store wasn’t giving much of a discount on it. Clarion had an all-in-one system, but it was very expensive. Other manufacturers had head units that were Bluetooth and Navigation “ready”, but you had to pay several hundred dollars more for additional hardware and installation. So Pyle was the clear choice, provided it worked. Later, I found out that Pyle has a model 74G that appears to have better buttons.

The installation took much longer than expected. The installer tried various distances and angles, and he ended up having to file off a substantial portion of the faceplate to make it fit and for the screen to fully open. Aside from the cost of time, I don’t consider this a major drawback of the unit. However, if I had taken this to Best Buy, I don’t think those kids would have made this work. And I am certainly glad I didn’t attempt to install it myself. So I recommend you hire a professional installer.

Update: after about two months of use, the GPS stopped working. It could not find the satellites. I thought it was because it was a very cloudy day, but after the sun came out it performed no better. I tried the reset button and the factory reset in the nav software to no avail. We contacted Pyle and sent it back to them for warranty service. Will update when it returns.

The unit seems fairly sturdy, and the detachable faceplate was a pleasant surprise to thwart would-be thieves. That saved me from getting an alarm system for my old car which would have brought my audio equipment almost up to the value of the car itself.

The display on the unit is very nice. You can set preferences for color, brightness, tint, and contrast. The buttons on the faceplate itself are very tiny and a bit tight fresh from the box. I suspect that we will be controlling it mostly from the touch screen.

The touch screen folds out nicely and has adjustable angles by a long-hold on the open/close. Obviously, your long-hold becomes a short hold, then your screen will fold away unintentionally. There is another place to adjust the screen angle in the menus.

I have not hooked anything up to the auxiliary input, but I had no problem mounting a USB flash drive, an SD card, and Bluetooth streaming from my phone. You can load an SD card behind the faceplate. An 8GB SD card holds just about all the music I want to listen to, so I don’t see any reason to use anything else. The menu for the SD card shows truncated titles of the file names, so you should probably rename the files to something short. Most thumb drives will stick way out from the faceplate, but I recently found low profile ones that are barely visible when you plug them in. There is a also a micro SD card behind the face plate that contains the data for the GPS, so don’t mess with that.

The unit played a CD perfectly, but it would not initially play a DVD. When I brought it back to install the backup camera, the installer solved the problem with the DVD player. I got a great picture with the movie Top Gun, and for the first time in my life I heard all the words of Danger Zone.

Once you select your radio preset stations, it has a nice menu list by frequency.

The navigation has been virtually flawless. It has even taught me quick routes I didn’t know existed. I managed to spoof the satellites a few times and it gave me directions too late, but I’ve had similar problems with other GPS before. The unit recalculated course changes much quicker than another reviewer said it would. The navigation has a ton of user-defined optional settings – probably more than you want or need. The manual doesn’t explain them very well (or at all), so when you change things you don’t really know what you’re changing them to. But I really enjoy the British female voice of my navigation, it makes me feel a little bit like James Bond. :) I’m actually disappointed that my new car’s navigation system doesn’t have some of the navigation options the Pyle has.

One bad quality of this product is its cumbersome menus. It takes quite a while to figure out where everything is and how to get back to the main menu. The main menu is style over substance; you swipe left or right to scroll through screens, but you have to swipe REALLY HARD to go to the next screen. There are buttons in the menus that you think will take you back don’t. If you are in one mode, for example, Auxiliary, you have to hit the Aux button to go back to the main menu. This makes no sense!

On the navigation, I was able to set my home address as a favorite place and rename it as Home, but…

Wow, you just don’t expect a car DVD screen to have such sharp colors. I was thoroughly amazed at the beautiful picture excellent touch-screen controls. The screen telescopes out nice and freely, then its pretty darned stable and sturdy. It has all the functions you could possibly want in this one little unit, and sounds good to boot. The front panel looks pretty sharp, too, with the lit-up controls. Just excellent.

This is no super high end system, so I did not expect too much out of it, only the basics of what was listed. That being said I can now praise this for what it is. I received this today and installed in under half an house. Pretty damn good considering I soldered the connections to the harness and shrink wrapped everything. Finding a place for the GPS module is tricky because I wanted it hidden, and to be clear of any obstructions that could effect the signal. I ended up putting it inside the kick panel of my Matrix. The touch screen is very responsive (resistive) and can be calibrated at the angle you are viewing. The GPS is amazing, very fast once its loaded and the speedo built in is accurate. It took a little tinkering to get the application installed because at first the card was not being read. The sound is pretty good but using bluetooth through my iPhone is a little disappointing. I have my phone AND the headunit at max volume and the sound is still pretty nominal. Through CD, USB, SD, and AUX however, the sound is great. Sounds better than the Alpine unit I replaced which was a 1000W system boasting a massive 250W per speaker. The speakers I have are currently 150W speakers so they go great with the 80W per speaker since it doesnt overload them. I will keep everyone updated as time progresses. I have great expectations of this head unit now that I’ve seen what it can do. I will post again in a month after a road trip to tell everyone how it holds up.
